DC Comics recently announced that Sean Gordon Murphy would be creating a seven issue miniseries called Batman: White Knight. It is said that the miniseries will have a massive cast and will be an epic story. The heart of this story will be the tragedy of a hero and a villain. Though the question is which one is which.
The Joker is known to be Batman’s greatest nemesis. Though in Murphy’s story, he will be the White Knight who must save Gotham from The Batman.
Sean Murphy told DC Comics, “We know Joker’s a genius, we know he’s relentless, and we know he can play the crowd, so why not make him a politician? Why not strip away the psychosis (the thing that’s holding him back) and let him challenge Batman unimpeded? And to make it even scarier, what if he did it legally and without breaking any rules, so that Batman couldn’t stop him?”
This elseworlds story will take place in a Gotham City where the Joker has been cured of his insanity. The Joker no longer wants to kill people either. The Joker, now Jack, is out trying to right his wrongs. He reconciles with Harley Quinn and then goes out to try and save Gotham City. He believes the Batman is Gotham’s worst enemy and should be stopped.
Murphy continued saying, “Seeing Gotham for the first time with clear eyes, his psychosis now cured, he starts to understand the absurdity of vigilantism and how Batman’s actions are only contributing to Gotham’s endless crime cycle. Joker sets out to beat Batman by becoming the White Knight that Gotham really needs.”
This story has a unique perspective on the DC Universe as it has one of the greatest super villains of all time become a hero while one of it’s greatest heroes becomes a villain. Similar to how certain politicians may seem as if they are heroes but in reality, they may actually be villains.
