Apart from a truly unbelievable game of football, Sunday night brought a few other exciting developments. The Super Bowl is always a big time for the debut of movie and television trailers, and this year was no exception.
Trailers dropped for The Fate of the Furious, Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2, Life, Logan, and Ghost in the Shell, to name a few. But one trailer in particular stole the show: a teaser for season two of Stranger Things.
Stranger Things was Netflix’s big hit of last summer, a show full of charm, twists and compelling science fiction thrills. And its success was very quickly acted upon, with Netflix ordering a season two about a month after the release of the first season.
Producer/director Shawn Levy confirmed to Collider last year that the show has been shooting in Atlanta, where they shot season one, and theories abound as to what the story will be. Well, last night’s trailer gave us a few hints:
It had already been confirmed by sightings of Millie Bobby Brown in Atlanta and by a cast photo released by Netflix, but the trailer showed that beyond a doubt, Eleven is returning. This answers what was essentially the biggest question everyone was left with at the end of season one.
The series appears to be taking place one year after the events of the first season. The show will premiere on Halloween, and also seems to occur in part during Halloween, seeing as how Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin) and Mike (Finn Wolfhard) are shown in Ghostbusters outfits (a movie that, in Stranger Things’ timeline, would have just come out).
The main reveal of the trailer though, happens in the final few shots. Will Byers, having returned from the Upside Down, looks like he’s been sketching some strange images. Then, he sees them come to life: what looks like an enormous, spider-like monster, towering over the trees, outside of his front door.
So, that’s happening in the Upside Down, right? Probably. But either way, that creature looks about a hundred times worse than the puny demagorgon. How will the gang deal with this one? More nail-studded bats and bear traps?
Maybe one of the new characters will have something to say about it. According to TVLine, they include Max, a tomboyish young girl, her “muscular and hyper-confident” older brother Billy, and a character named Roman, about whom nothing is known except that they “suffered a great loss at an early age” and have been “seeking revenge ever since.”
The show doesn’t premiere for another seven months, so we’re really lucky to already have all the information, and footage, that we have. In any case, here’s hoping it can live up to the high standards of season one.
