Game of Thrones Announces Season 7 Premiere Date

The wait is over! Or at least, the wait finally has a concrete finish line. On a Facebook Live stream today, HBO announced the premiere date for season seven of Game of Thrones: July 16th.

They also released a brief video that features the sigils of each of the major houses writhing and intertwining, and then crumbling into dust, before revealing the blue eye of a White Walker. A quick refresher on the house sigils featured in the video: three dragons = Targaryen, lion = Lannister, direwolf = Stark, kraken = Greyjoy, rose = Tyrell, stag = Baratheon.

The video is full of quotes from the show’s main characters from past seasons, but ends with a new clip of Jon Snow saying, “There is only one war that matters. The Great War. And it is here.”

We’ve been waiting for this war, the literal song of ice (White Walkers) and fire (dragons), for the entirety of the series. Whether or not we’ll get to the major battle fireworks this season or not, it’s sure to be compelling, with many favorite characters’ storylines still far from resolved.

It’ll be a shorter season than usual, only seven episodes. And if HBO sticks to its current plan, the eighth and final season will only have six episodes. It’s a sad prospect, but exciting in one way: after years of dilly-dallying in Meereen, now we know that some serious dragon shit is about to hit the fan.

Below you can see the video teaser, as well as the newly released poster for season seven. And just for posterity, one more time: Game of Thrones season seven will premiere on July 16th.
