Gigi Hadid shoots down body shamers

Death To Bullying

Gigi Hadid has been busy strutting through New York Fashion Week runways in top designer shows including Prabal Gurung and Bottega Veneta. But the model has also been going through a tough time dealing with online trolls who have been body shaming her due to noticeable weight loss.

In the wake of numerous hurtful comments, the model has decided to defend herself and reveal that she suffers from a disorder called “Hashimoto’s disease” — an autoimmune condition where the thyroid is ‘gradually destroyed.’ Hadid took to Twitter to share more on the condition and how it’s affecting her daily life. Additionally, she shared that she has been “properly medicated” to help alleviate some of the symptoms that come with having this disorder.

This immune condition is not very talked about, but it affects women and men of all ages. Statistics show women are eight times more likely to suffer from this disorder than men.  Just in the United States, the condition affects 14 million people, including multiple models and actresses who have been body shamed just like Hadid. Symptoms include weight loss, weight gain, hair loss, muscle weakness, extreme fatigue, and depression.

The model’s tweets draw attention to not only the disorder, but to the fact that body shaming and online bullying continue to be prominent in the industry.

In a world that continues to evolve, and diversify it is quite disheartening to see body shaming still being a huge word-wide problem. Negative comments on someone’s appearance can be harmful no matter how minimal or innocent they may seem. It is time for change.
