2014’s John Wick was one of the most pleasantly surprising movies of the past few years. There are plenty of run-of-the-mill action movies these days, but Keanu Reeves’ return to form was a stunningly choreographed love letter to violence, plus a cute puppy to boot.
Think: if John Woo was given the script to Turner & Hooch and forced to shoot in exclusively neon-lit nightclubs. Okay, that might not be exactly right. But boy, if only that movie existed.
The success of the film was soon met with news of a sequel, and as the ancient saying goes: as long as the original people are in, go ahead. Good news then, that returning to direct is stunt veteran Chad Stahelski, whose experience made the first film stand out among its action peers.
This new clip features the great Lance Reddick, reprising his role, in almost the exact same scene as we see with him in the first film. But this time, John Wick is looking a little worse for wear, and he’s got a new cute dog in tow.
The standoff between Reddick and the pit bull is a wonderful example of why the first movie worked so well: action-packed, serious, but also with a strangely light touch.
You know those moments when the bad guy makes a joke, our captive hero laughs, and the bad guy suddenly gets serious and says “you think it’s funny?” That’s sort of how John Wick works.
John Wick: Chapter 2 stars Ruby Rose, Ian McShane, Common, and Laurence Fishburne. It is due out on February 10th.
