Khalid steams up “Love Lies” single with Normani Kordei

Steamy new track from Love, Simon film

Khalid and Normani want to set the mood.

After building buzz via social media, singer Khalid and Normani Kordei of Fifth Harmony have finally released their collaboration, and Normani’s first under her solo publishing deal, “Love Lies” just in time for Valentine’s Day.

Even though the song opens with Khalid singing “Sorry if it’s hard to catch my vibe,” the vibe of the song is certainly not hard to pick up on. The beat is simple, but impactful. The same, beautiful guitar riff plays throughout the song with a subtle bassline on the hooks and chorus. The guitar loop is accentuated by finger snaps keeping the beat. It’s exquisite in its simplicity.

Both singers voices are beautifully showcased. Khalid’s somewhat raspy voice contrasts the clarity of Normani’s. It’s a beautiful balance when they layer their voices over the chorus and hook. In essence, the collaboration was a vocal match made in heaven.

The song is the first single off of the soundtrack for the new movie Love, Simon. The film is based on the book Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli. It follows Simon as he navigates the highs and extreme lows of high school and his closeted sexuality.

The lyrics to the song are a perfect fit to the story. In the book, Simon talks to another student who he discovers is gay. They’re both still in the closet.

It’s hard for me to open up, I’ll admit it/You got some shit to say/So I’m here to listen

He also doesn’t know the identity of the other student.

I’m been so into your mystery/Is it because of our history?/Are you into me?

It’s a song befitting of the film starring Nick Robinson and Katherine LangfordThe Hollywood Life reports that the soundtrack will also feature new songs by Bleachers, the 1975 and Troye Sivan. With the lead single already being so good, it’s likely that the rest of the original songs will be equally as fantastic.

Love, Simon hits theaters March 16th. The soundtrack will be available for streaming the same day.
