Louisiana rapper Lil’ Boosie got more than he bargained for while in Biloxi, Mississippi for the annual “Biloxi Black Beach Weekend” spring break event. The rapper not only got pepper-sprayed but also alleges the Biloxi Police Department has stolen $1M dollars of jewelry from him during a traffic stop after the incident.
Boosie and his entourage were in town for the 4th annual “Biloxi Black Beach Weekend,” an event where predominantly black college students from all over the South from Texas to Florida come to the Mississippi Gulf Coast for a weekend of fun, live music, and bikinis. Each year, the event is met with scrutiny from the locals even though it brings much-needed tourism money to the region.
This year, the main event held on Saturday was a concert with Lil’ Boosie, Migos, Jeezy, Yo Gotti, Lloyd, Meek Mill, and YFN Lucci. On Sunday, Boosie and his entourage decided they would drop some cash at the local Dillard’s department store. A crowd soon formed in the store of on-lookers and fans. This is common when celebrities go shopping, but apparently, this was too much for the small town mall because soon after the security at Dillard’s asked Boosie to leave. When the rapper refused to leave, he and his entourage were then maced by the security guard. Fan Crystal Whitmore of Arkansas captured the incident on video featured above via The Sun Herald.
In videos posted yesterday to Instagram, Boosie also claimed that his pregnant niece that was also with him at the mall was also sprayed as they were asked to leave.
After leaving, they were pulled over by the Biloxi Police Department where several of his entourage were arrested on charges of assault of a police officer, as well as assault on a security officer. In addition, Boosie also says that when they were pulled over by Biloxi Police, his jewelry sack with over $1M in jewelry mysteriously went missing.
Biloxi police has stolen a million dollars in jewelry from me we going protest soon follow my ig for times n dates I need my fans to support this injustice. This is 1968 all over again they trying to take my my jewelry from me this is crazy. When I see my Po Friday I'm asking permission to go to the steps of the Biloxi court with my fans,n lawyers n hold a press conference about this million dollar theft that has been committed.Im sick of the police ,the banks stealing my hard earned money I'm just tired I'm tired 💰💰like wtf / I'm bout to make so many hate songs about the cops /they get away with everything I'm headed to the studio n speak my fucking mind I'm releasing it to all bogs 12 noon tomorrow 👍freedom of speech repost n put Biloxi police you owe us millions as the caption/Don't go to there casinos r anything they have there this will happen to anyone successful hashtag #nobiloxinomore #nobiloximore don't go Biloxi all Boosie fans hashtag nobiloxinomore
The rapper has called for a protest and boycott of Biloxi, and all of its businesses with the hashtag #nobiloxinomore. The local casino industry is the largest source of revenue for the town, where several are owned by Las Vegas giants like MGM and Mirage. It is not sure how much of an impact the protest and boycott will have on the local economy, but it does say something about the state of racial tensions.
Mississippi is nowhere near as bad as it was in the 1950’s, that is exponentially clear. Biloxi is by far the more diverse and tolerant part of the state because of the tourism industry there. But it is also clear, that no matter what you are doing, the color of your skin will vilify you in the eyes of others who are prejudice even if they are unaware of it.
Each year this event is held, there is local opposition, mostly the opposition comes from those who claim that the event brings “thugs,” “drugs,” and “crime” to town. This same city has yearly events, such as “Crusin’ the Coast” and “Scrapin’ The Coast” car shows that are celebrated and promoted to the locals for everyone to come down and enjoy. Those same week-long events bring travelers from all over the country, and much needed revenue, just like Black Beach Weekend. Black Beach Weekend, however, is never celebrated and is reported by the local news only to show how to avoid traffic from the event. Spring Break cities such as Cancun, Miami, and Panama City Beach, see the same type of college kids, the same sort of parties, and the same level of celebrities as this event but have not seen the same kind of treatment.
Celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Britney Spears, and a plethora of others can go out and shop in department stores just as Boosie did, and are also met with crowds of fans, but we’ve never heard of any of them being maced by security. It just goes to show you, not matter how much money or talent one has, in some places, and with some people, the color of one’s skin erases your humanity.
