Lil Yachty is one of many artists that has blurred the lines between the traditional album release and a mixtape.
In its traditional format, a mixtape either showed-off a DJs skills or featured artists singing and/or rapping over current hits to address matters that could not wait for a proper release date.
The immediacy and competition of it all is what drove the format but now that has changed.
Today the mixtape is either a free clearing house of good material that didn’t fit the album or it’s a street album that sets up a career or feeds into the styles that the artist would prefer to make.
So Yachty, who has already written it in stone that he is a leader of the new school, is about to release his first album Teenage Emotions.
In the video interview with Genius below, he spoke on the record’s vibe and feel.
“[Teenage Emotions] kind of got a ’80s, ’90s vibe on some of the tracks,” Yachty says of his new album. “It’s called Teenage Emotions so it caters to a teenager’s everyday lifestyle: heartbreak, happiness, that vibe of when you’re waking up in the morning, getting dressed and want to dance. It’s not just bars or straight mumble rap, it goes down different lanes. I be rapping real hard on this one, I be pop singing on this, and I be talking about being lost in love on this one, then back to ‘fuck you, suck my dick!’”
And with that being said, watch the rest of what Yachty has to say as he learns how to make pizza.
