Netflix hit the world with an unlikely hit in their supernatural cop movie ‘Bright‘ starring Will Smith and Joel Edgerton.
In this fantasy world, humans, orcs, fairies, elves, and the elusive bright’s.
Although it may sound like a frivolous fun fantasy/action flick, ‘Bright’ focus’ on some intense social issues.
Segregation, prejudice, racism, and police brutality are all a part of this fantasy world where the people of the magic community and the humans are forced to coexist.
Orcs are looked down upon like the scum of the earth while elves and humans are at the top of the food chain.
This dynamic is heavy throughout the movie as Ward’s partner Jakoby is subject to ridicule by the police department, the community, his partner, and even his fellow orcs.
His partner Ward is faced with the scrutiny from his fellow officers for not turning his back on Jakoby, and doing the right thing by him.
This all changes when Ward is faced with a difficult choice of choosing the department, his livelihood and his fellow humans over Jakoby when the duo meets a young bright in trouble named ‘Tikka.’
From there the movie takes on an action-packed ride through the dangerous underworld of gangs and the supernatural.
Although the initial reviews from sites like Rotten Tomatoes were terrible (28%), the views of this movie were astronomical over the holidays.
The supernatural elements mixed with the social issues of the current climate gave this movie an interesting dynamic and seeing those themes portrayed in this different way seems to have people intrigued by how this story will continue.
Although this story was left with many backstory holes to be filled, our questions may be answered since the movie has been greenlit for a sequel.
Overall, ‘Bright’ is an action-packed fantasy cop film that will keep you guessing about which side you would be on.
