Franz Ferdinand is back for a new wave of rock.
The rockers from Glasgow just released their 5th studio album Always Ascending. The 10 track LP is a meld of rock, disco, and new wave that might be their best yet.
Their last album Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action (2013), is a stark difference from this new sound. The band, which has been on the mainstream scene for nearly 20 years, always seems to give us music that can encapsulate a moment in time seamlessly.
This latest album has a new sound due to its producer Phillippe Zdar, who has worked with artists such as Chromeo, The Beastie Boys, Phoenix, and his own group Cassius.
The new slow and calculated grooves like the track “Paper Cages”, give an air of a band that is relaxed in the music they are playing. In others such as “The Academy Award”, the voice of singer Alex Kapranos is haunting as he speaks of our distorted media-obsessed society.
In addition to the new producer for this album, two new band members have injected their own style into the band. Nick McCarthy, a founding member, left the band in 2016, and they have since picked up members, Dino Bardot (guitar) and Julian Corrie (keyboards and guitar) which add to the slightly new sound.
Whenever there is a shift in dynamic, the sound of a group changes, this time it seems the new changes within are pushing the band in a more exploratory direction.
The influences of funk, disco, new wave, and rock that can be heard throughout this album display a longevity, that holds to the standard of their debut album Franz Ferdinand.
Overall, the energy, tone, and execution is a perfect example of the new experimental waters music is moving into.
