REVIEW: Jidenna Drops Surprising New EP ‘Boomerang’

Rapper/Singer Returns With Six New Songs

Hip-Hop recording artist Jidenna is once again turning heads with the surprise release of his six-song, Boomerang EP. The album is a follow-up to the Nigerian-American songwriter’s critically acclaimed major label debut, The Chief, which was released by Epic Records back in February.

jidenna-boomerangThe EP is largely produced by his long-time cohort, Nana Kwabena, a Ghanaian-American producer/DJ/engineer who has worked with such big-name artists as Kanye WestRick RossJohn LegendJanelle Monáe and Kendrick Lamar.

Jidenna opens his new EP with the track, “Decibels,” an upbeat intro-track that starts things off with an angry voicemail from someone who clearly had her heart set on seeing Solange at the AfroPunk Music Festival in Brooklyn. He continues to rip into the track, which is co-produced by Steve Rhythm, formerly of The Hitmen, and Jerren “J-Kits” Spruill, who has previously worked with Selah Sue, Trey Songz, K. Michelle, and Raphael Saadiq.

The title track, “Boomerang” changes the pace with this rhythmic electronic dance track from world-famous producer Diplo and also featuring DJ Alvaro and Boaz van de Beatz of the Netherlands. Nigerian singer-songwriter Tiwa Savage also joins Jidenna on the track, “Spy Candy,” a harmonious new track all about snooping on social media.

“Bambi Too” is actually a trap-heavy remix of a promotional single from his debut album that showcases his flexibility as a lyricist, switching from rap to a more traditional style of songwriting. The remix, produced by Kwabena and Nate “Rocket” Wonder, features rapper Quavo of the Atlanta hip-hop trio, Migos, Nigerian recording artist Maleek Berry, and Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie on this soulful melody. Sure, it doesn’t sound too different from the original in someways, but if the indigenous Igbo-style rhythm didn’t move you before, just wait until you hear the new verses.

The new EP draws to a close with yet another new remix of the track, “Little Bit More,” co-produced by  Roman GianArthur and featuring Nigerian reggae-dancehall artist Burna Boy. We hear another of Jidenna’s voice messages, which brings us into the final track, “Out of Body” featuring Wale and Dot Cromwell.

It’s truly refreshing when a mainstream musician, like Jidenna, shows that they can still put out a truly solid Extended Play record like this one. And, while it may not be perfect, it is damn near close.

RATING: 4.5/5
