Seattle Mariners’ Pitching Staff Bit by Injury Bug

The Seattle Mariners have once again been bit by the injury bug, and it has wrecked their starting rotation. The latest pitcher to head to the disabled list is Hisashi Iwakuma with shoulder inflammation.

With Iwakuma now on the 10-day disabled list, the Mariners rotation is down to one of its starting five (Yovani Gallardo). Iwakuma, Felix Hernandez, James Paxton and Drew Smyly are all currently on the shelf for Seattle. And the Mariners have more than just pitchers on the DL though, as the chart below shows.

Despite four of the starting five on the DL, the Mariners surprisingly only find themselves one game below .500. The team is in second place in the AL West, trailing the Houston Astros by 6.5 games. But, they are barely out of a wild card spot. Seattle trails the Twins and Red Sox by 1-1/2 games in the wild card hunt at this point of the season.

The West is having a down season–besides Houston–and the Seattle Mariners are a team that has enough talent to stay in the playoff hunt well into September. Assuming the big arms they have get healthy, look for them to make a push and end their long playoff drought.

There is no guarantee that the injury bug will stay away from the team though, and that will keep fans on edge.
