Secret Screening of The Last Jedi Footage shows Luke, Finn

Rian Johnson’s Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi doesn’t come out until December, but you can already hear the wheels of the Star Wars hype train are creaking to life (although for some, the Star Wars Hype Train never stops; it is the only source of perpetual, renewable energy in the universe, and much like the Snowpiercer, it travels on a constant loop around the Earth, and will continue to do so even after a devastating apocalypse).

According to the Los Angeles Times, Disney shareholders were gifted with a sneak peek at footage from the upcoming film. No video was taken (or at least it hasn’t been leaked), but reporter Daniel Miller tweeted about the contents of the footage. Most notably, it featured what are probably Luke Skywalker’s first on-screen, canonical words of dialogue since The Return of the Jedi, and they are, understandably: “Who are you?”

Without the footage to view, we can’t say if that’s the confused “who are you” of a befuddled old man, or the significant “who are you” of a wizened hermit master. I’m going to guess it’s the latter.

As Miller describes, the footage takes up the story directly after the iconic ending of The Force Awakens, as Rey extended the lightsaber to Luke. Also included in the footage were Finn, Leia, Chewbacca and a number of different locales.

We don’t yet know when we’ll get a first trailer for the film. For the record, though: The Force Awakens premiered on December 18, 2015. Its first teaser came out more than a year in advance, on November 28, 2014. The first full trailer wasn’t posted until about two months before the film, on October 19, 2015.

All of which is to say: we could be getting a tiny trailer any day now, but most likely won’t get anything substantial until sometime this fall. The hype train will have no shortage of fuel, though, in any case.

Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi premieres on December 15, 2017.
