Tala Ashe Joins DC’s Legends of Tomorrow

DC and Warner made a prime casting choice.

adrianna2_593630b5e6d2b2-41412934This morning, DC and Warner Bros. Television have announced that actress Tala Ashe from American Odyssey has joined the cast of Legends of Tomorrow as Zari Adrianna Tomaz

Producers of the show describe the character to be “a Muslim-American woman from the year 2030, Zari lives in a world of contradictions. Technology has brought about incredible change in her future—too bad human nature hasn’t kept pace. Fear, prejudice and a lack of care for the planet have forced Zari to become a “grey hat hacktivist.” A computer nerd with a wry, combative attitude.  A woman living a double life who doesn’t realize that she has secret, latent powers derived from an ancient, mystical source.

The mystical source that is implied could actually be power from the Egyptian Goddess Isis. Adrianna Tomaz is the most recent incarnation of the hero Isis who wields the power of the Egyptian Goddess of the same name. Tomaz debuted in the weekly comic series 52, where she’d go on to play a key role and develop a close relationship with the character of Black Adam until ultimately dying (and being resurrected before dying again) in a tragic turn of events.
Obviously, this adaptation of the character will differ from the one that was established within the comic books. Within the comics, Adrianna Tomaz was not from the future. With the character in the show being a Muslim-American, one has to question how Egyptian mythology will have an effect on her and her powers.

One thing to notice is that Legends of Tomorrow may be using this character to provide a statement for American politics at the moment. President Trump has been known to make outlandish comments about Muslim people. Since President Trump pulled America out of the Paris Climate Accord, it is possible that the future of the planet will be in a dark place. A place that people like Zari Adrianna Tomaz will have to live in.
