Although President Trump named his daughter after this prestigious jewelry company, the people who created the little blue box, Tiffany &Co. have some pretty strong words about his policies.
In 2015, President Obama made a bold and earth-conscious move at the Paris summit on climate change to agree for the United States to cut greenhouse emissions and combat climate change. The agreement, which was signed, not only by the United States but also 195 other countries, is paramount to helping save the lives of billions of people who are affected by the drastic weather anomalies and heating of the atmosphere due to greenhouse gas emissions.
Our new president, Donald Trump has been making major changes in the White House and seems to have a mission of erasing President Obama’s legacy. He and the rest of his party have already attempted to repeal the Affordable Care Act, canceled the healthy food program for public schools, and have even gotten rid of the Let Girls Learn initiative both set up by former First Lady Michelle Obama.
The brand Tiffany & Co. took a stand as a company and called out President Trump to keep the Paris Climate Change Agreement from being another Obama-era policy to be erased, not because the company is necessarily political, but because they understand climate change affects everyone. On their social media pages, the company posted the following message:
There are sure to be many people who dislike the company’s stance on this matter, but Tiffany & Co. are dedicated to advocating for change. In a statement written to Huffington Post, chief sustainability officer Anisa Kamadoli Costa had this to say:
As a part of Tiffany & Co.’s commitment to sustainability, we support the global movement act on climate change. Using our brand to advocate for this important issue- in addition to Tiffany’s long-term goal of net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 is one of the most important actions we can take. Tiffany has long recognized the importance of protecting our fragile planet for future generations, and our aspiration is to leave behind a world that is as beautiful and abundant as the one we inherited.
This is a powerful statement for a brand to make, especially one as established as Tiffany’s. We wonder as his term progresses how many other brands will call upon him to make better policy decisions publicly? Only time will tell.
