Donatella Versace has always been on the forefront of fashion. As the head of her own established fashion house Versace, founded by her late brother Gianni, Donatella has kept the fashions, and the name of her brand on the upper echelon of the industry. So it came as a surprise to many when she revealed that she would be the new face of the Fall/Winter campaign of a rival fashion house Givenchy.
Donatella, who will now be among many other famous faces of the Givenchy brand, such as Julia Roberts and Erykah Badu, had a simple reason for why she decided to model for the rival house on her Instagram page.
“I believe in breaking rules. Riccardo Tisci is extremely talented and above all my dear friend. We are family. I want to get rid of the old system, work together, support each other and make fashion a true global community.”
All the love that Donatella showed in her posts to social media was returned whole heartedly by the creative director of Givenchy, Riccardo Tisci.
“I am proud to present you with my new Givenchy F/W15 campaign, starring a personal muse of mine, my one and only #DONATELLAVERSACE #Love #Family #Muse #Elegance #Beauty #Icon #timeless #gang #FamilyCampaign.”
Styled by the designer, her friend, Riccardo Tisci, Donatella was photographed by Mert Alas and Mac Piggot, and styled by Carine Roitfield. In the sleek black and white images from the campaign, Donatella embodies the strong alluring presence of the Givenchy woman. Her presence seems to fit perfectly with the brand.
Now that Donatella and Givenchy have set a new bar, will other design houses follow suit? As other brands take the route of heading their campaigns for fall with recording artists (Rihanna for Christian Dior, and Ciara for Roberto Cavalli) Tisci has made a bold move by featuring his colleague in his designs. It is lovely to see, even in such a competitive industry, there is still a sense of honor and respect among colleagues.
