Lebron James has the city of Cleveland holding their breath yet again. ESPN sources reported that Lebron will opt out of his $21.6 million dollar player option and become an unrestricted free agent. It should be noted that Lebron fully intends to resign with the Cavaliers.
The Cavaliers have a long list of free agents from the core of their team this past season including Kevin Love, Tristan Thompson, J.R. Smith and Iman Shumpert. This is part of the reason why Lebron is opting out of his player option. He wants to see what kind of roster moves the Cavaliers are going to make the first few weeks of free agency before he re-signs with the team.
There are a few options for Lebron to consider entering free agency.
1) Signing with another team in free agency if he does not like the roster moves the Cavaliers make this off-season.
2) The Cavaliers will most likely offer Lebron a max contract offer. This deal would include a four year deal around $22 million dollars a year.
3) Re-signing a two year deal with the Cavaliers again including a player option following the 2015-2016 NBA season. This would allow him to opt out of his contract again next year. After next year the NBA cap and max salaries increase. This would allow Lebron to opt out again next year at this time and re-sign a maximum long term deal with the Cavaliers.
This decision from Lebron to become a free agent is not a surprise to anyone. This was what we all expected from the four time NBA most valuable player. There is no reason at the moment, for anyone in Cleveland to believe that Lebron won’t be back in a Cavaliers uniform next season.
Lebron is just keeping all of his options open and who can blame him. The best player in the world is taking a wait and see approach. It is a very smart decision by Lebron as he will wait to make his final decision a few weeks into the NBA free agency.
