R&B diva Kelly Rowland has rolled onto the cast of Fox’s breakthrough musical drama Empire.
The former Destiny’s Child capo will play the mom of Lucious Lyons as he flashes back to his childhood memories during season two.
Ruu Hawkins of Rolling Out Magazine reports that Rowland first sparked speculation that she may make an appearance on the show when she shared an image on Instagram around early June, of herself joined by ‘Empire’ screenwriters.
Terrence Howard confirmed it on Sunday with his post stating “terrencehoward_ Welcome Kelly Rowland to the Empire Family! She will play Lucious Lyon’s mother in flashbacks.#EmpireSeason2”
Kelly made her first TV debut in 2002 as Carly on The Hughleys. Other roles followed including 2003’s Freddie vs Jason and 2012’s Think Like A Man.
Rowland’s episode count is yet to be released but it would not be a surprise if her talent was used to explain’s Lucious’ love of music.
Perhaps mama sang him sweet lullabies that provided a stark contrast to the horrors of the street.
Empire returns on Sept. 23 and it hosts a slew of other notable additions.
Chris Rock, Lenny Kravitz, Alicia Keys and Marisa Tomei are in que as is Adam Rodriguez who is Cookie’s (Taraji P. Henson) love interest.
Can Empire repeat as ratings champs or will its larger-than-life aura fizzle out as quickly as it arrived?
