NFL Training Camp is in full swing and there has been quite a lot that has already taken place in a short amount of time. These are 10 observations that sum up how the last week or two have gone for NFL teams. They are in no specific order, as each one of these observations has an impact on the team, player and NFL itself. These 10 observations will undoubtedly have an impact as the season moves forward into the next stage — preseason games. Some of the observations also have an impact on each team’s depth chart as the regular season approaches.
10. Special League Meeting
The NFL owners held a special meeting on Tuesday to discuss two topics: the 2016 NFL Draft and football in Los Angeles. They voted to hold the NFL Draft in Chicago, Illinois for the second consecutive year after such a great turnout in 2015. There hasn’t been any news on football being played in Los Angeles at this point, but something could leak in the next few weeks. One thing is for sure; the San Diego Chargers are not pleased with the idea of a new stadium in San Diego.
9. Steve Smith Sr. has announced 2015 will be his last season
The Ravens’ wide receiver has announced that this upcoming season will be his last, and everyone should be sad to see him go. He has tallied 915 receptions and 13, 262 receiving yards to go with 73 receiving touchdowns in 198 career regular season games. He headed to Baltimore prior to last season after spending the first 13 years of his NFL career with the Carolina Panthers, and he has left us scratching our heads throughout his career with some of the catches that he has made.
8. Amari Cooper showing Raiders why they drafted him
According to those attending Oakland Raiders training camp, wide receiver Amari Cooper is showing the Raiders the exact reason why they drafted him in this year’s draft. He can run routes with precision, make acrobatic catches and out jump everyone on the field. Keep an eye out for his talents to be splashed across a television near you starting this preseason, and go pick him up in your fantasy football draft if you haven’t held it yet. He will be giving AFC West defensive backs all they can handle this season, and Derek Carr will be very appreciative.
7. The 49ers nightmare offseason continues
The San Francisco 49ers are having the worst offseason in the history of the NFL. They have had players retire in droves (Chris Borland, Justin Smith, Jonathan Martin, Patrick Willis, Anthony Davis) and just released their best defensive player, Aldon Smith, after he was arrested last Thursday for driving under the influence, hit and run and vandalism. They were able to bring in some talent by signing Reggie Bush and Torrey Smith, but they most likely won’t survive the NFC West, let alone the rest of their schedule.
6. Marcus Mariota impressing Titans
The Tennessee Titans drafted the former Oregon Ducks quarterback this year and he was one of the last first-round draft picks to sign a contract. That would normally scare a team, but he has yet to throw an interception in training camp. Mind you this is against the Titans’ defense, but it still has to be mentioned. We will see what a difference it makes when JJ Watt is running at him full speed, but the Titans have to be feeling like they made the right choice at this point of training camp.
