The Air Guitar World Championships has yet to achieve its goal of bringing world peace, but for 20 years now, it’s brought a lot of smiles. Despite the rain, the annual spectacle in Oulu, Finland drew thousands of spectators and thirty competitors from across the globe.
And, unlike other musical competitions, you don’t need any musical talent to win, says show producer Hanna Jakku.
“You don’t even have to know how to play an instrument and you can still be part of that song that is your favorite song.”
The Netherlands’ 2015 champion Sita “The Guilty Director” Van Sante discussed the judging process.
“I think it’s difficult to know what the judges are looking for, it depends on who is judging,” Van Sante said.
Judge Juha Torvinen says each judge has his or her own thing.
“I like craziness. I like improvisation, craziness, that’s my thing,”Torvinen stated.
The reigning world champion – Nanami “Seven Seas” Nagura from Japan – finished fourth this year.
The final battle came down to American Matt “Aristotle” Burns and Russian Kareel “Your Daddy” Blumenkrants.
And with one announcement all was said and done.
“The winner of tonight’s 20th annual World Air Guitar Championship is, Your Daddy!” And, for the first time in the competition’s history, a Russian is the world’s reigning guitar hero.
