The tight end position appears to be turning into a deeper position pool than was expected for fantasy football this season. Most years it is the Rob Gronkowski, Jimmy Graham, Greg Olsen and Martellus Bennett show, but not in 2015. Tight ends like Kelce, Eifert and Seferian-Jenkins are making a name for themselves and fantasy owners finally have quite a few options to choose from. That in itself is a reason to pay attention to matchups that involve tight ends, especially how they matchup against opposing defenses.
Here are the Week 2 choose or lose tight end candidates:
Jason Witten vs. Eagles
The Cowboys‘ tight end had a two-touchdown performance last week and even caught the game-winner against the Giants. Look for him to be even more important to the Cowboys’ offense now that Dez Bryant is out for an indefinite amount of time. What could be better than an eight reception, 60 receiving yard and two-touchdown game in Week 1? A matchup against the Eagles’ defense in Week 2 that should see Witten being targeted over 10 times and making the most of it.
Dwayne Allen vs. Jets
Are you seeing the theme here? Like the Cowboys, the Colts‘ offense will be without their No. 1 wide receiver in T.Y. Hilton, which only adds value to their tight end. Allen had a decent game against the Bills’ defense — catching three passes for 17 yards and a touchdown — but he also had a huge gain called back due to a penalty. Without Hilton, the Jets will be focused on Moncrief and Dorsett, which will mean that Allen can have a solid game this week.
Jordan Cameron vs. Jaguars
Cameron had an impressive week against the Redskins in the season opener–posting four catches for 73 yards but no touchdowns. This week you can expect him to get into the end zone and post double-digit fantasy points against the horrid Jaguars’ defense. The Jags did silence Greg Olsen in Week 1, but the Panthers don’t have as many weapons as the Dolphins’ offense does.
Greg Olsen vs. Texans
If you started Olsen in Week 1, you ended up being severely disappointed. In fact, it might have been the difference in you winning or losing last week in your league. Olsen was a beast last season, but the Texans’ can hone in on him this week because Kelvin Benjamin (out for season) won’t be there to help. Devin Funchess looks like he won’t be scaring many teams this season either, so Olsen might be the biggest regret that owners have in 2015. If you can, check the waiver wire for Eifert or Seferian-Jenkins and pick them up because they should help you win in Olsen’s absence this season.
On the Bubble
Scott Chandler vs. Bills
Of course if you own Gronk he will be starting every week, but Chandler could be a sneaky waiver wire pickup this week. Chandler scored a touchdown in Week 1 against the Steelers, but he faces his former team this week and is sure to be targeted by Brady quite often, especially if King Kong shows up to cover Gronk. Players such as Chandler — who was dropped by the Bills this offseason — tend to love the ability to show what their former team is missing out on when they face them, and this matchup shouldn’t be any different.
