Style and music collide on Fox‘s Empire as Season 2 brings some surprising changes that will excite, inspire and bring more powerhouse trends to the fashion and hip hop industries. As Emmy nominated costume designer Rita McGhee steps down from her role as the designer for Cookie Lyons played by Taraji P. Henson, new fashion relationships have been formed with Saks Fifth Avenue to display Empire inspired windows at their flagship stores in New York and Beverly Hills.
McGhee tells Saint Louis Today Magazine “Everyone (character) has their own color story and styles, (clothing) cuts and inspirations, and all the outfits have this quality that this could be the last time you ever see them and this outfit would speak to who they are.”
In the September edition of Harper’s Bazaar the matriarch of the Lyon family does a feline inspired photo shoot looking like the queen of the jungle in a Roberto Cavalli Animalier blouse from his Fall 2015 collection. Although animal prints were the key focus of Cookie’s wardrobe last season, her outfits for season 2 give way to more abstract prints that have more of an earthy tone and are full of color.
The season 2 trailer also shows Cookie in a short blue jean jacket with metallic gold trim that gives her a younger look and is accented by big bold jewelry that is another staple of her style. But it’s the peacock-feathered Gucci dress Cookie wears for the “Free Lucious” concert that’s getting all the buzz for her wardrobe.
Terrence Howard’s costume designers will be focusing on old school styles as they flash back on the past of Lucious Lyon and how the music icon came to be the big cat of the industry. While Howard is in a orange jumpsuit for most of the show, plaid shirts and bold hats show up in several flashbacks of his life before the music.
Not only are the wardrobes being made over, the music has taken on a little makeover too. Executive Music Producer Timbaland will be joined by Grammy Award winner Ne-Yo as they collaborate on this season’s new soundtrack Empire: 2 Volume 1. With hopes that it will hit number one on the Billboard charts like the season one soundtrack.
The firsts two tracks have been released and already have well over 100k views on Vevo. Both songs are packed with super hot dance beats that will keep bodies on the dance floor. Pitbull joins Jussie Smollett on “No Doubt About It” co-written by Ne-Yo that brings a hip shaking dance groove that will hype up any party.
“Ain’t About The Money” is head bobbing anthem cut with Smollett on lead vocals and Bryshere Y. Gray (Yazz) bringing the smooth unapologetic lyrics that Hakeem is known for with a catchy memorable hook.
This season promises that sparks will fly as kingdoms collide in the 18-episode second season of Empire which premieres on September 23rd.
