Last week the Miami Dolphins finally showed why they have all the makings of being a top 10 defense in the NFL. They finished with six sacks against the Tennessee Titans, including four from Cameron Wake. How will the Dolphins fare this week? Let’s find out in another edition of choose or lose for defense.
MIAMI DOLPHINS VS. HOUSTON TEXANS
As mentioned earlier, the Dolphins helped jump-start their offense by forcing four turnovers along with six sacks. This week they take on the Houston Texans in a matchup that features the two best defensive lineman in the game, J.J. Watt and Ndamukong Suh.
Brian Hoyer has been solid lately but he can’t be if he’s on his back. The Dolphins should finally start putting a pass rush together and make Hoyer’s life miserable. If you’ve got a top five defense on a bye this week, the Dolphins might not be a bad option this week.
WASHINGTON REDSKINS VS. TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS
The Redskins benefited from a punt return touchdown against the New York Jets but it’s unlikely that that will happen this week against the Buccaneers. The Bucs are very generous against opposing defenses, they rank 21st in the league.
The Redskins defense has forced six turnovers the last two weeks, so there’s a good chance they force a couple against turnover prone Jameis Winston.
HOUSTON TEXANS VS. MIAMI DOLPHINS
The Texans defense really hasn’t been themselves lately, that’s mainly because teams have wised up and started double-teaming J.J. Watt on every single play.
The Texans have never been great against the passing game and the coaching change looks like it did wonders for the Dolphins offense. Lamar Miller might finally turn things around and Ryan Tannehill has multiple weapons at his disposal. The Texans are a defense to stay away from this week.
TENNESSEE TITANS VS. ATLANTA FALCONS
The Titans have a solid defense overall but their offense is going to put them in some tough positions going forward. It’s tough to do your job on defense when your always on the field. This week the Titans defense has to deal with one of the best offensive teams in the league with the Falcons.
Devonta Freeman continues to play out of his mind and Julio Jones is due for another huge game after three quiet weeks. The Titans are definitely a risk to play this week.
ON THE BUBBLE
NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS VS. NEW YORK JETS
The Patriots defense are always an opportunistic group, especially against the New York Jets. This could go either way, the Pats didn’t force a single turnover and allowed 27 points to the Colts last week. If they don’t stop Chris Ivory who is running extremely well and if Ryan Fitzpatrick is efficient like he was last week, the Jets can put up some points.
On the other hand, Bill Belichick and the Patriots can come up with different coverages to fool Fitzpatrick which could lead to turnovers. It’s a rivalry game and anything is possible in grudge matches like these.
