Embattled Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho was sent off at halftime during his side’s 2-1 loss to West Ham United at Upton Park during the first leg of the London Derby. Unconfirmed reports state that Mourinho attempted to enter the referees room during halftime and that led to his red card. He watched the rest of the match from the director’s box at Upton Park.
Mourinho was not happy with the way that Chelsea looked during the first half of the match. Nemanja Matic was sent off in the 44th minute after receiving his second yellow card for fouling Diafra Sakho in front of the linesman on the far side. Matic’s first yellow came in the 35th minute when he fouled Cheikhou Kouyaté in clear site of the referee.
First team coach Silvino Louro was sent off after protesting Matic’s red card, according to the Mirror.
It is unclear whether or not Mourinho was trying to go and discuss the sending off of Matic with the officials during halftime, but he’s been a manager in top-flight soccer long enough to know that you don’t just walk into the referees’ dressing room. You ask if you can come in and if they say no, you leave — plain and simple.
Mourinho left Upton Park’s tunnels without speaking to the press. This is a developing story so check back as more information becomes available and make sure to read the full English Premier League recap on Monday. Here is ESPN FC‘s full match report on the match.
