Week 8 Choose or Lose: Quarterbacks

One of the surprise performances at the quarterback position last week was from Kirk Cousins. Instead of throwing interceptions down the stretch he came through in the clutch and guided the Redskins to a comeback victory. Will Kirk Cousins end up on this week’s choose or lose list? Let’s find out.

CHOOSE

CAM NEWTON VS. INDIANAPOLIS COLTS

Cam Newton has been an average fantasy quarterback so far this season. That’s still impressive considering his only real options to throw to are Greg Olsen and Ted Ginn Jr. This week the unbeaten Panthers play the 3-4 Colts on Monday Night Football.

Newton has never shied away from the spotlight and he should be prolific against a Colts team that is 20th against opposing quarterbacks. The Colts defense can give up a lot of yards and Cam can exploit that through the air and on the ground. Newton is a must-start candidate this week.

RYAN TANNEHILL VS. NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS

The Patriots have had a bend but not break mentality over the last couple of seasons. That’s why the Patriots are actually 27th in the NFL against quarterbacks.

Ryan Tannehill is coming off of a four touchdown performance against the Texans and their balanced offense could turn this game into a shootout against Tom Brady and the Pats. Whether the Dolphins fall behind early in the game or not, Tannehill should have a great day.

MATT RYAN VS. TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS

Matt Ryan’s recent performances have seen him fall out of the top 10 fantasy quarterback discussion. This week he’ll have a great chance to get back on track against a Buccaneers team that is 29th in the NFL against opposing quarterbacks.

The Bucs secondary isn’t very good, so expect “Matty Ice” to find Julio Jones all day long and put up some huge numbers.

LOSE

RUSSELL WILSON VS. DALLAS COWBOYS

Russell Wilson still hasn’t thrown for more than 300 passing yards in a game and he’s only scored more than 20 fantasy points just once this season. This week, Wilson and the Seahawks travel to Jerry World to take on the Cowboys. Even though Greg Hardy is a terrible person he’s still a menace on the football field.

On top of that the Cowboys are 10th in the league against quarterbacks. The Seahawks would have to be trailing by a huge margin for Wilson to be throwing the ball and that won’t happen with Matt Cassel at quarterback for Dallas. Sit Russell Wilson this week and look for someone else.

JOSH MCCOWN VS. ARIZONA CARDINALS

After a 457 yard performance against the Ravens, Josh McCown has had a tough time getting back into form. Part of that is because he’s had to go up against the Broncos and Rams defense in back to back weeks.

It won’t get any easier against an Arizona Cardinals defense that is 6th against opposing quarterbacks and hasn’t allowed a 20 point performance this season. Josh McCown is definitely worth keeping on your bench if you own him.

ON THE BUBBLE

ALEX SMITH VS. DETROIT LIONS

Alex Smith is a guy who shouldn’t be a week to week starter on your fantasy team but he’s worth a shot if you have a quarterback on a bye week. The Lions are terrible defending the passing game and have allowed more than 300 yards through the air over the last two weeks.

Smith has a good matchup but there’s always a risk that Smith will go into to game manager mode and not even throw for more than 200 yards. It could be one of those high risk, high reward scenarios.

MARCUS MARIOTA VS. HOUSTON TEXANS

Marcus Mariota will be awaiting clearance from the team to get the start this week after a knee injury. Titans fans will be hoping he does because of the great matchup he has against the Texans who just got lit up by the Dolphins.

Ryan Tannehill just threw four touchdowns on this defense and this game could be a huge confidence boost for Mariota coming off of an injury. If Mariota plays and he takes care of the ball, he could easily throw it around the the yard against this Texans defense that only has J.J. Watt.
