This has been the year of the backup running back in the NFL. Numerous stars like Jamaal Charles, Le’Veon Bell and Justin Forsett have gone down with serious injuries. This week, the running backs list will definitely feature some more backup tail backs.
JAVORIUS ALLEN VS. MIAMI DOLPHINS
The fourth round rookie out of USC has been the workhouse back for the Ravens since Justin Forsett unfortunately broke his arm. Allen has plenty of upside because of the lack of options at receiver and he’s proven that he can catch passes out of the backfield as well.
This week he faces a Dolphins defense that is 30th against opposing running backs. He should get a ton of touches which will garner some nice results.
SHAUN DRAUGHN VS. CHICAGO BEARS
Shaun Draughn and Peyton Hillis are two former Cleveland Browns running backs who ended up being some of the biggest one-hit wonders in NFL history. Now Draughn is back in the spotlight for another terrible team because of injuries.
Draughn continues to receive a tremendous amount of touches for the 49ers, and while he hasn’t been highly effecient it’s still solid. Draughn had 86 total yards against the Cardinals last week and now he’s got a much better matchup against the Bears. With all the struggles that fantasy owners have endured with running backs this season, Draughn is worth giving a shot.
C.J. ANDERSON VS. SAN DIEGO CHARGERS
There are plenty of fantasy owners such as a myself who drafted C.J. Anderson way too high. It took him until Week 12 to have a noteworthy performance.
Anderson has had to compete with Ronnie Hillman for most of the season but Anderson is finally starting to show signs of production with his limited touches.
Now Anderson faces a Chargers team that is dead last against fantasy running backs. It could be a risk but I definitely like C.J. Anderson to at least have some decent production.
MARK INGRAM VS. CAROLINA PANTHERS
Fantasy owners of Mark Ingram must be unhappy at the sight of the Carolina Panthers defense being next on the Saints schedule. He may be projected to put up some points but that might only happen in garbage time.
Ingram is facing a Panthers defense that is 9th against opposing running backs. Ingram is a RB2 option at best this week.
LAMAR MILLER VS. BALTIMORE RAVENS
Lamar Miller’s rise late in the season seems to have been genuinely short-lived. Miller has only had a combined 68 total yards over the last two weeks.
It won’t get any easier against a Ravens front seven that is 6th in the league against running backs. Baltimore has only allowed two 100 yard rushing games this season, it might be best to look for other options this week.
ON THE BUBBLE
DEMARCO MURRAY VS. NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS
Believe it or not, DeMarco Murray and the Eagles are still a game out of first place in the NFC East. They have a lot left to play for and now they face the New England Patriots coming off of a loss. The Patriots defense has been pretty good against the running game ranking 12th against fantasy running backs.
The thing is the Pats just let C.J. Anderson run all over them in the key moments of the game. If Murray gets those kinds of opportunities he could have a breakout game as well. It all depends on who well the Patriots respond.
