Bowl season is upon us, which makes it one of the most wonderful times of the year. We at Salute Magazine are breaking down bowl games slightly different than anyone else in our bowl bash previews. Instead of giving you a mile long list of bowl previews, we are attacking them based on the date. It makes it easier for you as the reader and it keeps the games organized for quicker reference. Without further delay, here are the games on Dec. 24 (Christmas Eve).
Popeyes Bahamas Bowl (Noon EST, ESPN)
Middle Tennessee (7-5, 6-2 C-USA) vs. Western Michigan (7-5, 6-2 MAC)
The MAC has already seen Toledo pull off a big upset over Temple in the Marmot Boca Raton Bowl and Akron secure their first bowl win in school history over Utah State in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. Will that bowl dominance continue in the Popeyes Bahamas Bowl with a Western Michigan win?
Western Michigan opened the season with a two-game losing streak and then rattled off a five-game win streak in the middle of the season. They followed that up with another two-game losing streak before closing the regular season out with a 35-30 win at Toledo. The Broncos are led by quarterback Zach Terrell and wide receiver Daniel Braverman, but the defense was the main issue for them by allowing opponents to score 28.1 points per game against them.
Middle Tennessee also struggled on the defensive side of the ball and allowed 25.1 points per game to opponents. They suffered a three-game skid during the season but closed out strong with four straight wins (Marshall, at Florida Atlantic, North Texas and Texas San Antonio), but Western Michigan had a slightly tougher schedule than the Blue Raiders. The win streak by Middle Tennessee is nice but it ends in this bowl game.
