CAMPING WORLD INDEPENDENCE BOWL
TULSA (6-6, 3-5 AAC) VS. VIRGINIA TECH (6-6, 4-4 ACC)
These two teams have played in a ton of close games this season against good teams. Tulsa is a program that really loves to throw the football, this year they averaged 330 yards passing. The problem with the Golden Hurricane is that they play no defense at all.
They’ve proven that they can score points against the likes of Oklahoma, Houston and Memphis but they also give up more than 500 yards on defense.
Tulsa face Virginia Tech in what will be Frank Beamer’s swan song with the program. He’s been the face of the school for so long, it’s going to be strange to see something other than Beamer Ball from the Hokies. Their lunch pail mentality of having a strong defense, special teams and effort will be the difference in this game.
The Hokies always find a way to play close games, their losses to UNC, Duke and Pitt were by a combined nine points and most of their season was played without star quarterback Michael Brewer.
This season could have been a lot different for Va Tech if Brewer hadn’t broken his collarbone against Ohio State. They’re two touchdown favorites but I think Tulsa will score enough points to make it somewhat competitive, Tulsa will barely cover.
