The life of a NBA big man is a precarious one when it comes to being a shot blocker. More often than not, a big man has the timing to block a shot. Once in a while they missed on their timing and that’s when they get dunked on.
Shaun Bradley, Timofey Mozgov and other elite shot blockers have been vilified by some of the league’s biggest dunkers over the years. There was plenty of that during the first half of the 2015-2016 NBA season. Enjoy watching the 10 best dunks from the season so far.
10. VINTAGE LEBRON ALLEY-OOP WITH JR SMITH
LeBron James is the alley-oop master, his unparalleled athleticism allow for him to go up and get the ball from just about anywhere in the air.
This was a great team move, Kyrie Irving throws a perfect outlet pass to JR Smith, he sees LeBron trailing and throws it up for the highlight dunk. It’s always an added bonus when you see an All-Star caliber move in a regular season game.
9. WINSLOW DUNKS ON THREE HORNETS
This play is one of the reasons that fans and scouts are in love with the skill and athleticism of Justise Winslow. The former Duke wing player is still adjusting to life in the NBA but he’s still provided energy and defense off the bench.
This also isn’t the only highlight reel dunk he’s had all year. Winslow dunked it right in Ersan Ilyasova’s face over a month ago.
The move that Winslow makes on the baseline with the shot fake along with the ferocious slam reminds me of John Starks dunk over three Bulls. The Miami Heat have plenty to look forward to with Justise Winslow.
8. DWIGHT HOWARD DESTROYS PORZINGIS
Dwight Howard gave Kristaps Porzingis a proper introduction to the NBA with this major posterization.
It was a bit of a shock to see Marcus Thornton throw the pass but Dwight Howard did what he does best at the rim. D12 will be happy to have a highlight play like that at Madison Square Garden.
7. HORFORD DECIMATES HILL
Al Horford continues to be a critical part of the Atlanta Hawks success as a franchise. The former Florida standout isn’t very flashy at all and he works hard on his game. He’s even added the three point shot to his repertoire.
On this play Horford showed off that he’s still got a lot of athleticism, Solomon Hill didn’t stand a chance.
6. GOODWIN SLAMS ON PORZINGIS
Kristaps Porzingis has been great for the New York Knicks this season but unfortunately he’s on this list twice for getting dunked on. Archie Goodwin has begun to take advantage of a coaching change in Phoenix, he’s scored more than 18 points in four of the last five games.
Goodwin still had plenty to do on this play, and he used every inch of his 6’5″ frame. Porzingis was back-pedaling which didn’t help but Goodwin’s athleticism was on full display. This was an absolute facial on Porzingis.
5. KG GIVES BLAKE A TASTE OF HIS OWN MEDICINE
One of the reasons this is so high on the list is because this is one of the rare times that Blake Griffin gets jammed on. Watching Kevin Garnett turn back the clock with the team he played with for 12 seasons was awesome.
Who knew he had the legs to put down this slam with authority? KG plants both feet in the lane and explodes off the ground. This is a that will definitely make the Big Ticket’s career highlight reel. What makes this dunk even better is the reaction from everyone in the building.
4. ALEC BURKS, FOR THE LOVE OF ELEVATION
Alec Burks has started to come along nicely as an offensive scorer for the Utah Jazz. Unfortunately, Burks is likely done for the rest of the season after breaking his left fibula in late December.
The former Colorado star was making plays like these all season for the Jazz before he got hurt. Jon Leuer should have honestly gotten out of the way on this one, he’s gonna on plenty of posters after this highflying dunk.
3. HOLMES GIVES HORFORD A HUGE FACIAL
Richaun Holmes was a relatively unknown rookie out of Bowling Green who was drafted by the 76ers. It’s safe to say that a lot of people know who he is know after this monster slam over Al Horford.
Holmes possesses plenty of athleticism at 6’10” and as the commentator in the video said, he really climbed the ladder on this one.
2. DEANDRE JORDAN BURIES GREG MONROE
Every single year, Blake Griffin or DeAndre Jordan have given us dunk of the year candidates. Jordan was at it again and this time Greg Monroe was his latest victim.
This could probably be number one on the list but DeAndre Jordan is just a bit bigger than my pick at number one.
The Bucks played some terrible defense on this play. Jordan is a couple feet past the three point line and he sees a gaping hole in the lane which allowed for him to elevate.
Greg Monroe should know better, especially since he wasn’t set to get the charging call.
1. DEROZAN DEMOLISHES GOBERT
DeMar DeRozan is one of the more dynamic and most improved players in the NBA. The former USC star was always a great dunker before he became a star player for the Raptors.
Rudy Gobert averages 2.4 blocks per game which is 2nd in the NBA behind Hassan Whiteside. One of the reasons why he’s so good as a rim protector is his wingspan which is 7 feet 8 inches.
DeRozan could care less about any of that stuff, especially after the way he shoved the ball down Gobert’s throat. Gobert has seven inches on DeRozan but none of it mattered at all.
This is number one for me because of the size difference, the elevation and the force with which DeRozan threw down this jam.
