For one of the few times in city history, Reno, Nev., has added a sports team that could increase the popularity of the surrounding area. Earlier on Thursday, the front office of the Reno Aces (AAA affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks) and United Soccer League (USL) Reno announced the team name for USL Reno.
After receiving over 5,300 votes in the “Name your team contest” for USL Reno, a final team name was announced on Thursday afternoon underneath a clear, blue sky in the city of Reno. The name reveal took place at the Whitney Peak Hotel and there were roughly 50-100 fans and members of the press present at the unveiling.
The name: Reno 1868 FC (Football Club), which received roughly 3,000 of the 5,300 votes in the naming contest.
The term “1868” holds historical value in Reno, Nev., as this is the year that the city of Reno was founded. Team president Eric Edelstein explained that this team will be the only active American soccer team to use the founding year in its name, the lettering chosen celebrates three golden eras in Reno history and that the spark in the “O” of Reno represents the Reno arch that is found in downtown and pays tribute to the city’s mid-century growth.
The biggest announcement previous to USL Reno’s team name was when the AAA Reno Aces baseball team announced that they would be relocating from Tucson, Ariz. to Reno, Nev., in 2007.
Edelstein had the following to say about how the club has gotten to this point:
“It was Sept. 16, , and since then we’ve embarked on an incredible effort to generate as much feedback as we possibly can from our community about what they want to see in your professional soccer club here in Reno,” Edelstein said.
“We are under no illusion that we’re in control of this; the community is in control and we’ve taken that feedback all the way through. From asking folks to e-mail us their ideas to setting up submissions, to hosting focus groups to get more in-depth with what people want to see. Not just from the name, but the colors, the logo [and] all those things,” Edelstein continued.
If soccer fans in the Reno area — and beyond — are as excited as they were during the process that has seen the team get to this point, good things will be taking place for years to come. Below is the broadcast of the team unveiling its name on Thursday afternoon.
