No one takes the internet seriously on April Fool’s Day, and for good reason. Most of the articles are absurd jokes meant to give us a good laugh as we go about our day. However, it seems that one of the jokes buried beneath the rest was no joke at all. Amongst the rumors of TV shows featuring Moon Knight, She-Hulk, Bullseye and more, one show turned out to be coming to Freeform Entertainment (aka what was once ABC Family). And that show is ‘Cloak and Dagger.’
For those unfamiliar with the characters, Cloak and Dagger, aka Tyron Johnson and Tandy Bowen, are two teenagers who, when dating, are kidnapped and forcibly tested upon, turning them into superheroes. Cloak has the ability to teleport over great distances, whereas Dagger creates, as one might expect, psionic daggers that can both drain enemies of vitality and heal certain ailments, such as addiction to drugs.
The show is currently described as a “live-action, interracial romance” show, telling us that the show will be featuring live actors within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as one would assume, but also that there will be a primary focus on the romance between the characters rather than the more action-oriented Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. or the yet to debut comedy-oriented Damage Control.
While I am excited to see these somewhat obscure characters being brought into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I have a feeling this show won’t be marketed towards my demographic. It’s clear that the age of the characters and the intention to focus on a teenage romance means that Marvel is likely using this to reach out to younger audiences, as opposed to the brutal shows Netflix has been providing, like Daredevil and Jessica Jones.
It’s unclear as to when the show will be premiering, but I imagine we’ll see the first episode sometime before the end of this year.
