While Daredevil Season 2 was something of a mess in terms of theming and overall focus, there were certainly the occasional exciting action sequences or interesting conversation, a majority of which featured Punisher, aka Frank Castle. And with the conclusion of his story arc within the show, it was clear that we would see more of Castle’s ventures in the future. But I never imagined it would be so soon.
Marvel Studios has just announced that a Punisher Netflix TV series is being developed, with Steve Lightfoot taking on the role of executive producer and showrunner of the series overall. Additionally, Lightfoot will be writing the first two episodes. While there is no planned release date, rumor has it that the show will be taking place sometime after the Defenders show, both in terms of the timeline and when we’ll be getting to see it. Unsurprisingly, Jon Bernthal will be reprising his role, but there’s no word on any of the other Netflix superheroes appearing in the series.
While the Netflix shows are starting to feel tired and repetitive in nature, I can’t help but feel somewhat excited about what this show could offer, especially from a tonal perspective. So far, we’ve seen a more traditional superhero-esque show through Daredevil and the mystery drama of Jessica Jones, with the first seasons of both being incredibly enjoyable. If the Punisher series plays its cards right and doesn’t focus too much on the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole, then I am certain we’re in for a fantastic addition to the Netflix collection.
