At this time of year, we’re normally only about a month away from the premiere of a new season of Game of Thrones. But unfortunately, this year the wait is longer.
There’s no official premiere date set for the seventh and penultimate season of the super-popular HBO fantasy series, but rumors (including a vague comment made by Davos Seaworth actor Liam Cunningham) seem to suggest that it’ll be sometime this summer.
HBO knows that fans are thirsting for even the tiniest taste of the new season, and so that’s what they’ve given us. According to Watchers on the Wall, HBO aired a couple different mini-promos during regular programming that reassured viewers that the show is “in production.”
The first is simply a look at Oathkeeper, Brienne of Tarth’s sword, as given to her by Jaime Lannister:

The second shows Lena Headey, still clad in black, preparing for a shot as the newly crowned Queen Cersei:

But what does it mean? Surely the clip of Oathkeeper is some arcane clue, hinting at the carnage that’s in store, not just a cool clip that would make an easy five-second ad, right? Does it represent Brienne, keeping her sworn oath to protect the Starks? Or perhaps Jaime, Westeros’ most famous oath-breaker, forced to turn on his power-hungry sister/lover, the same way he once did against the Mad King?
It’s basically impossible to know. Game of Thrones is technically more unpredictable than it’s ever been, with the past season blowing past the currently released novels and no indication that George R. R. Martin will give us The Winds of Winter any time soon.
So for now, we’ll take whatever we can get, even if it’s about ten seconds of mostly nothing. In the meanwhile, if you haven’t seen it, here’s last season’s blooper reel to tide you over.
