Russell Westbrook: Yet Another Triple Double

Westbrook Notches Another Triple-Double

Thursday night the Oklahoma City Thunder took on the San Antonio Spurs in a very heated Western Conference battle. Even though the Spurs were playing with fire, while on a nine-game winning streak, they could not overcome the Thunder. Oklahoma lost the game 102-92.

Now, the contest included many notable players like the Thunder’s Victor Oladipo and Russell Westbrook. Also, the dynamic two-way player Kawhi Leonard, Pau Gasol and Lamarcus Aldridge of the Spurs. But Westbrook stole the show at home.

Westbrook ended the game with an astonishing 23 points, 13 rebounds and 13 assists according to ESPN. His performance gives him 31 triple-doubles. This ties him with Wilt Chamberlin for a season and second to Oscar Roberson, who holds the record of 41.

Associated Press shows Westbrook’s feelings on the accomplishment.

“It’s a blessing, man,” he said. “You come out every night and compete and try to compete at a high level. Whenever you are mentioned with guys like that, it’s always a blessing. I don’t take it for granted.”

Oklahoma’s win would be an entire team effort. Oladipo scored 20 points and Doug McDermott added 11. Enes Kanter was a spark plug off the bench with a double-double, scoring 14 points and 10 boards. In fact they are 25-6 when Westbrook gets a triple-double and 11-23 when he falls short.

The Spurs top scorer was Leonard with 19. Aldridge and Gasol also came up huge scoring 17 and 18 points respectively.

Leonard would leave in the fourth with a head injury. San Antonio appeared to be deer in headlights when time started to dwindled down. Spurs’ coach Greg Popovich did not approve of his teams play.

“He got hit in the mouth, or in the cheek, or in the head or something,” Popovich said. “I’m not sure which. So the trainer thought he should sit.” Popovich then went on.

“They beat us anyway,” he said. “If Kawhi would have played in the fourth, if they would have continued to do what they were doing and we continued to do what we were doing, they would have won anyway. We never make excuses. We got our butts kicked.”

The game’s outcome ended a four-game losing streak for the Thunder. It also snapped a nine-game winning streak for the Spurs as they both fight for playoff positioning.

San Antonio sits two games behind the Golden State Warriors for the top spot.
