J. Cole is quietly one of the most influential rappers in the scene. He stays true to his strong lyrical content which flexes between social issues, personal antidotes and other perspectives that are lifted from his thoughts.
Compared to his peers, he’s not a social media felon nor is he an attention-starved fame seeker.
He’s just J. Cole and he’s content with being one of the best of his generation.
So when word drops that he has a new visual project coming to HBO, our collective ears perk up at attention.
According to HBO, the special J. Cole: 4 Your Eyez Only, A Dreamville Film is due on April 15.
The company stated that “the artist gives a voice to those struggling in the American south, capturing their stories through interviews and music.”
From a glimpse at the trailer below, the 60-minute ride is a gritty one that will provide plenty of food for thought.
As a southern resident, it can be verified that the sneak peek feels authentic.
This is not the first time that Cole has worked with HBO. His previous documentary focused on his tour for the album 2014 Forest Hills Drive.
A lot of good can come from this. Those that maligned him for his last record 4 Your Eyez Only will get another opportunity to embrace his vision.
The album which Salute hailed as excellent was panned by some who felt as if Cole went too far off the script.
Like life, art is a journey and not a destination. J. Cole seems to be committed to make the most out of every step along the way.
Some things just need to be seen and heard. Here’s to the hope that this documentary will live up to its trailer.
