Evan Engram is another athletic tight end in this year’s draft and he was selected No. 23 by the New York Giants. The Ole Miss tight end is able to shed linebackers and pesky defensive backs with his frame, and he enjoys it.
Another tight end, another limited sample of what he can do, although he has 162 career receptions. The 6-3, 233 pound tight end had 2,320 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns in his career for the Rebels too. This year’s draft has plenty of tight ends that will get drafted, but none of them standout above the rest. Engram has more of a stat line than Howard and Njoku, but they all are comparable in many ways.
Engram will improve his run-blocking (as he did in college), and he has the body to stay upright until crossing the plane. His center of gravity is above average and he loves to get physical with defenders. There is a chance that he is the best receiving tight end in this class, and will be fun to watch.
The Giants are getting a great blocker on the outside and a physical tight end that is hard to cover. There is a chance he plays at wide receiver, but no guarantees he lines up there. Like the Buccaneers did, the Giants are loading up their offense, although running back might have been a better selection at No. 23.
Engram is a smart playmaker that will be a big part of the Giants’ offense, and Eli Manning is going to have to pick who to kill defenses with in 2017.
