Dior goes Sauvage for Cruise 2018

Christian Dior took to the wild west for their 2018 Cruise collection, and it was truly sauvage.

Dior showed their western-inspired 2018 cruise collection deep in the heart of the Southern California desert. The location was the Upper Las Virgenes Canyon in Calabasas, which gave a grand stage to designs that were both modern and yet old world rugged.

This first cruise collection by the new creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri was inspired by the Lascaux cave paintings and the designs Christian Dior made from them in 1951. It is beautiful that this new creative director is drawing from the founder of the house for inspiration and bringing us designs that are not only inspired by him but the strength and feminity that captured his attention from the Lascaux cave paintings.

Ms. Grazia Chiuri is making a definite statement with her designs for the house, and it is refreshing to see her take on modern feminity.  The pieces were made for travel through the desert, wide brimmed flat-top hats embellished with prints and turquoise, long button-down dresses with prints of desert sunsets and cave prints, and lots of beaded and fringe detailing.

One of the most talked about additions to this collection were the furs. Rihanna showed up looking stunning in a fur from the collection.

Overall, the collection is a reflection of where Chiuri is taking the house as a designer. She is venturing into the great wide unknown and taking risks with her designs combining the seemingly rugged and masculine with the elegance of femininity.
