Batman and Harley Quinn Trailer Released

Batman returns with an old frienemy.

DC Comics has just released a new trailer for their newest animated movie Batman and Harley Quinn directed by Sam Liu. Bruce Timm, co-creator of the original DC Animated Universe, has written the movie along with James Krieg.

In that trailer, fans can get a sense of what to expect in the latest of DC Universe Original Movies. Within the trailer, we can see Poison Ivy and Floronic Man teaming up to get rid of all human life on the planet.

Batman and Nightwing recruit a retired Harley Quinn in order to find Poison Ivy and stop her from carrying out her plan.

Unlike the latest DC Animated Movies, this movie seems to have a more comedic tone to previous animated movies. Unlike the controversial Batman: The Killing Joke, this movie will bring Batman and Nightwing into what seems to be a ridiculous situation.

While the trailer is only two minutes long, there seems to be a lot going on.  Poison Ivy and Floronic Man have broken into S.T.A.R. Labs to steal Dr. Alec Holland’s classified research. They apparently use it to conduct experiments that have changed a mouse into a plant/animal hybrid.

Batman knows that Poison Ivy and Floronic Man are working together but does not know what they are up to. In order to find out, he and Nightwing recruit Harley Quinn to find out where Poison Ivy is hiding. Harley Quinn is reluctant to help but is persuaded by Batman once he says, “As insane as you are, you enjoy living.”

While the animation style is similar to Bruce Timm’s The New Batman Adventures, a continuation of Batman: The Animated Series, James Krieg has stated in an earlier featurette, “This is kind of a strange red-headed nephew of Batman: The Animated Series.” This trailer shows Batman making some jokes, something he is not really known for in the original animated series.

What this movie has that is similar to the animated series other than the animation is the voice cast. Kevin Conroy will reprise his role as Batman/Bruce Wayne. Loren Lester will reprise his role as Dick Grayson/Nightwing. Of course, there are new actors that were not a part of the original animated series such as Melissa Rauch playing Harley Quinn, Paget Brewster as Poison Ivy, and Kevin Michael Richardson playing Jason Woodrue/Floronic Man.

Kevin Michael Richardson has voiced characters within the original DC Animated Universe being the voice of several characters within the series Static Shock, but has never been a voice within Batman: The Animated Series.

This trailer shows that DC Comics is changing their direction from making their animated films dark and gritty, to adding some comedy as well.

It is a welcome change that will probably result in a great movie. Batman and Harley Quinn will be coming soon to DVD and Blu-ray.
