DC Miniseries Nightwing: The New Order Due in August

The Grayson/Nightwing saga will be upended in this special run.

DC Comics announced that a new Nightwing miniseries, titled Nightwing: The New Order, is coming this August.

It will be an else world story written by New York Times bestselling Batman: Gates of Gotham team, writer Kyle Higgins and artist Trevor McCarthy. On the official DC website, the series is described as “an authoritarian future in an alternate universe in which superpowers have been eliminated and outlawed. The man responsible? None other than Grayson, the former vigilante Nightwing. But what happens when the system he has created targets his family as the next threat?”

On the official DC website, the series is described as “an authoritarian future in an alternate universe in which superpowers have been eliminated and outlawed.

The man responsible? None other than Grayson, the former vigilante Nightwing. But what happens when the system he has created targets his family as the next threat?”

The idea sounds similar to Marvel Comics’ Secret Empire event going on currently. In Secret Empire, Captain America himself has taken over America in the name of the terrorist group known as HYDRA. Unlike that series, this series will have no

Unlike that series, this series will have no effect on any of the Rebirth titles or the main storyline going on within the main DC Universe itself. This will be a six issue mini-series that takes place on its own, outside the DC Universe.

According to writer Kyle Higgins, “My all-time favorite DC books throw characters we know and love into future worlds that are equal parts familiar and terrifying, laced with moral issues that aren’t black and white or easily solved. Ultimately, these stories say something about our world. And that’s what we are aiming to do with this Nightwing story, through the lens of a future generation of heroes.”

From that quote and the description given about the series, it is same to assume that Nightwing: The New Order will explore the morality of different issues facing our world today. The mini-series might explore how the superhero world is not as black and white as it once was.

Another description released from the official DC website states, “Now leader of a government task force called the Crusaders, Grayson’s priorities are to hunt the remaining Supers and repress anyone who works outside the law. But when events transpire that turn the Crusaders’ aim toward Grayson’s own family, he must turn against the very system he created, with aid from the very people he’s been hunting for years—the last metahumans of the DC Universe.”

The story for this mini-series may not seem very original, but it could be more thought provoking if it explores problems within the real world. That could be an area where they can beat the competition. Also with an else world story, the world could be bigger or much different to the main universe usually shown.

“As an artist, there’s nothing better than world building,” McCarthy said to the DC website. “Diving in and figuring out a visual identity for a book, a character, a city…this is why I love making comics. Add to that the fact that it’s NIGHTWING—the first book I ever drew as a pro—and a chance to work with Kyle again, and I was beyond thrilled for the opportunity.”

A lot of passion is being put into this project. It may be a great Elseworld story to read. Nightwing: The New Order #1 comes to comic book stores on August 23rd.
