Marvel’s Secret Empire event has owned every bit of its build-up thus far. The story has been well-paced and Rod Reis and Andrea Sorrentino’s accompanying color and ink has been worthy of the term epic.
As issue number three prepares to infiltrate stores, it’s time to take note that the tension is spilling over and that a lot of problems are about to hit the fan.
Marvel’s website describes what’s to come on May 31st.
Under constant attack from wave after wave of invading Chitauri aliens, Captain Marvel and the deep space task force under her command is waging a war of attrition — one they may not be able to survive! And back on Earth, things aren’t looking too rosy for Hawkeye and his band of renegade heroes, either! But worry not —THE SECRET EMPIRE WILL AVENGE YOU!
The Guardians of the Galaxy will step their role up in this book as a part of the ensemble that is waging war above Earth.
This is not the worst thing as all of their resources happen to be interplanetary. Now that they are box-office phenoms, expect to see a lot more of them in top-shelf crossover titles.
Down on the rock, Captain America and Hydra maintain their death grip on the free world. This book will either allow the Defenders and Doctor Strange to free themselves from their dark dimension prison or further cement the feeling that all is lost.
If issue three goes the dark route, the eventual resolution will feel that much more liberating.
Nick Spencer is at the helm so there are still a lot of twists over the horizon based on his previous work.
Still, in its infancy, Secret Empire is shaping up to be one of Marvel’s strongest events. Look for the official Salute review on Tuesday, May 31st.
