In one of the most talked about moments of Cannes this year, Rihanna stepped onto the red carpet in a creamy white Dior gown and coat. The notorious bad girl looked positively angelic for the premiere of Okja at the French film festival. She paired the ultra-feminine gown with Matrix-style sunglasses for a modern take on bridal chic.
The silk taffeta dress featured a bustier top. Its pristine whiteness and traditional silhouette would not have looked out of place walking down the aisle. Tipping the look away from wedding-wear, however, was the matching coat that Rihanna wore carelessly off her shoulders. It trailed longer than the gown, adding inches to the look’s train. Counteracting the femininity, RiRi donned a chunky black bracelet and rings, and, of course, those Andy Wolf Eyewear sunglasses. All in all, it was a look that stood out.
The singer had a busy week in Cannes. Before the Okja premiere, she was the “ying” to her Dior “yang” as she donned all black to promote her new jewelry line with Chopard. The star took to Instagram to promote the decadent, colorful pieces from the “Rihanna Loves Chopard” line. She marked the occasion by writing;
“Thank you to the wonderful Caroline Scheufele for such an unbelievable opportunity to create high-end jewelry for the first time in my career!”
For the launch, she wore a gown similar in femininity to the Dior one, only this time in black.
Rihanna has been a Dior ambassador since 2015 when she made history by becoming the label’s first black spokesperson. Since then, she starred in one of their “Secret Garden” videos and attracted attention with her distinct looks at Dior shows. Fittingly, Dior announced just days after her appearance that she had teamed up with the brand for a line of sunglasses. Suddenly, the combination of Dior gown and statement sunglasses makes perfect sense. It’s another first for the fashion house. No other Dior ambassador has had the opportunity to work with designers for a line of products.
The custom Dior gown she wore to the Okja premiere may have seemed at odds with her Bad Gal reputation. However, she still managed a Bad Gal move. Posting a picture to Instagram, she wrote, “When you show up uninvited.” It featured her as the sole figure on the red carpet, her shadow long as crowds surrounded her, snapping pictures. Whether or not she was truly uninvited, it added a badass element to her appearance. Reputation: upheld.
