On Instagram today, the founder of Off-White, Virgil Abloh, announced that he is designing a new IKEA bag. Many people know IKEA bags by their blue, bulkiness that has become a symbol of society. And, although this design will not be leaving markets anytime soon, this new bag will be introduced as an avant-garde option to bring life to the company that everyone knows and loves.
In Abloh’s Instagram announcement, he says, “We’re in a moment where IKEA is transcending, and people are bringing this ‘do it yourself’ culture to the blue bag. What I’m most interested in is doing that process in partnership with the brand. It’s allowing me to put my opinion on a classic. It’s unique, and distinctly as much of off-white as it’s IKEA.” Abloh has been working on many projects recently, such as a furniture collection that was revealed at Art Basel in 2016.
Abloh’s reasoning behind taking on IKEA and shining a light on the company? He believes wholeheartedly in the company, saying that they have guided people through some of the first phases of adult life. He also believes that IKEA stands for our generation, where they have influence over our decision-making. Abloh somehow found the perfect way to unite fashion with the integrity of a company that has been there for many people making their first choices to decorate their first apartment, home, or business.
