Column: Male Senators Attempt Defunding Planned Parenthood (Again)

The Trickle Down

Can’t we have a comprehensive health care policy AND Planned Parenthood?

Several white men in power gather in a room, secretly planning.  Their secret plan?  FINALLY defund Planned Parenthood with a Senate health care bill.  Planned Parenthood, you know, the place that give affordable health care to millions of women.

Thirteen men, and zero women, came up with a health care bill where one portion hugely affects women’s health care.  Mainly, defunding Planned Parenthood.  These conservative white men hate one service that Planned Parenthood provides: abortion.  And, more importantly, these men are willing to tank health care so no woman can access a service that men will never have.

Read the full text of the Senate health care bill.  If you want it in layman’s terms, check out Sen. Bob Casey’s (D-PA) twitter page.

Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT), one of the men writing the bill, has spouted falsehoods about Planned Parenthood on the Senate floor.  The man who is a known liar about Planned Parenthood is making laws governing the entity and the woman it serves to suit his political agenda.

It’s a political agenda because a majority of America does not agree with the GOP-lead Senate’s view on Planned Parenthood.  Moreover, Hatch’s state doesn’t agree with defunding Planned Parenthood.

Women, like Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), are tired of hearing lies and are being vocal about it.

Let’s be very clear: defunding Planned Parenthood will not prevent abortions.  Defunding Planned Parenthood will prevent safe abortions.

Abortion is not a new idea – it’s been happening for a long time.  Most likely, it will continue even if abortion is no longer legal.  In 2003, the World Health Organization estimated around 20 million unsafe abortions occurred worldwide.  In the United States, death rates from unsafe abortions (due to its illegal status) were high.

“In 1930, abortion was listed as the official cause of death for almost 2,700 women—nearly one-fifth (18%) of maternal deaths recorded in that year,” according to the Guttmacher Institute.

If these men hate abortions, why is the focus not on birth control?  (Ironically, one of Planned Parenthood’s services.)

In 2011, America’s abortion rate dropped to its lowest since the passing of 1973’s Roe v. Wade.  The abortion rate dropped to the lowest ever recorded in 2014.  Many attribute the 2014 rate to the contraception mandate of the Affordable Care Act; insurance companies must cover birth control before a co-pay.

(And no, your tax dollars don’t fund everyone’s abortions.  The Hyde Amendment restricts that.)

Defunding a major health services provider for women means taking away access to breast exams, family planning, and cancer screenings to millions.

If abortion is truly your issue with Planned Parenthood, then don’t get an abortion.  That shouldn’t be too hard for the 13 men designing this health care bill.
