Grammy Award-winning producer Malex has teamed up with Season 15 American Idol finalist Kassy Levels to bring us “Savage”. The pair co-wrote the song, but it’s Kassy Levels’ vocals that are lead on the track.
“Savage” is basically a breakup record with a funky sound. It talks about being in a relationship and not truly knowing the person you’re with. When things happen, especially bad things, people show you who they really are. And we often find out that their intentions are not in line in what they’ve represented themselves to be.
Malex and Kassy wrote “Savage” with Nigel Rivers who plays bass on the record and Justin Lyons who’s on the guitar. Nigel has played with Erykah Badu and Chrisette Michele, while Justin has played guitar for K-POP superstars BIGBANG. Normally, Malex and Kassy write songs for other artist’s project. However, this time they decided to release the song on their own. They took a trip to London to write and record the single.
Malex is a producer, songwriter, and audio engineer who has worked with artists such as Common, Eminem, Raekwon, and Gladys Knight. He’s well versed in music production, audio recording, mixing & mastering, songwriting, and sound design. He earned his Grammy for mix engineering Eminem’s The Marshall Mathers LP 2.
“Savage” is the first of three singles Malex will release in partnership with Illect Recordings. The label represents over 20 artists who swing more towards the Indie Hip-Hop side of the musical spectrum. Most of their artists’ music can be found on BandCamp. They also have a YouTube channel for their artists’ videos.
