Scottish record producer, DJ, singer, songwriter, and musician Calvin Harris recently released his fifth studio album, Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1.
Ready for the Weekend, Harris’ second studio album, was released in 2009 and debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart. It was later certified gold by the British Phonographic Industry.
Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1 features vocals by some of the biggest names in music such as Frank Ocean, Migos, Schoolboy Q, PartyNextDoor, D.R.A.M., Young Thug, Pharrell Williams, Ariana Grande, Future, Khalid, Travis Scott, John Legend, Snoop Dogg, Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry, Big Sean, Kehlani, Lil Yachty, and Jessie Reyez.
Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1 is more than a few hot beats supporting a All-Star cast of vocalists. The tracks differ stylistically from what Harris normally puts out. The album strays from his typical EDM leanings, showing off a more pop-funk vibe.
“Cash Out” is one of the best examples of this new sound Harris is striving for, putting more emphasis on lyrics rather than instrumentals.
It features ScHoolboy Q, PartyNextDoor, and D.R.A.M. “Faking It” sounds more hip-hop than any of the other tracks on the album. Kehlani lends her powerful vocals while Lil Yachty raps. The beats sound different from anything Harris has ever done.
“Skrt On Me” is a summer anthem that is custom-fitted for the beach.
“Feels” is one of the best tracks on the album and features Pharrell Williams, Katy Perry and Big Sean. It’s upbeat with a feel-good attitude that will translate well to the dancefloor.
Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1 shows Calvin Harris taking a new direction with his music, moving away from EDM in a way that’s both interesting and exciting.
