Review: LCD Soundsystem Drops New Single, “tonite”

lcd_soundsystem_-_american_dream_cover_artBack in 2002 LCD Soundsystem dropped their debut single, “Losing My Edge,” a song that quickly rose in popularity, and practically dominated the indie scene.

Fifteen years and one much-anticipated reunion later, they’re still bringing the hype and making killer tunes.

Their newest single off of the upcoming American Dream album, “tonite,” dropped recently, and it was well worth the wait.

While “tonight” is the third single to be released, following “Call the Police,” and the title track itself, “American Dream,” James Murphy has commented in a conversation with Tom Scharpling that those singles are “slightly misleading” when it comes to the over all tone of the album. So is “tonite” any more telling? Only time will tell, and with the album set to be released on August 20, curious listeners won’t have to wait long at all.

“tonite” is certainly more energetic than its predecessor singles, with a funky beat and techno stylings that will get stuck in anyone’s head upon the first listen. There’s definitely a groovy vibe permitting this track, And witty lyrics that are very much in keeping with the LCD Soundsystem style.

Said lyrics may seem simple at a glance, and even maybe a little silly, but they are actually pretty profound once given a little thought. With lines commenting on the current state of the media realm, from “what’s left of the airways” and the way “all the hits are saying the same thing,” there are definitely points being made here.

On top of all that, there’s even a layer of existentialism, as noted when Murphy sings that “life is finite, but s**t, it feels like forever,” and “the future’s a nightmare.” Given all this the title of the album itself seems rather tongue-in-cheek.

There’s so much to be unpacked in this one amazing track, and if it’s any more indicative of what American Dream has to offer, than the music world is in for one wild ride.

Rating: 4/5
