Romelu Lukaku was a bright spot during his Everton career, and helped the club secure a Europa League berth last season. But a rocky offseason filled with rumors and being in and out of the news regarding his status with the club. A move to Manchester United appeared to provide a spark for the striker. And he has proven that it has gone from a spark into a full explosion through two games of the Premier League season.
Lukaku is a player that has always been a threat to defenses throughout his career. But his unhappiness often cost him chances of better play on the field, which seemed to be his only weakness. His effort has long been consistent, but soccer fans knew when the unhappiness set in.
Now that the forward has shed all of his unhappiness and is playing for a PL team that should consistently be in the top four of the table, it is as if Lukaku has released all negativity that may have held him back. It isn’t a knock on him, but some players wear their heart on their sleeve, and he is one of those players.
Manager Jose Mourinho feels that his team is filled with confidence through two games this season, and Lukaku is definitely playing like it.
“The word that describes better the team now is confidence. The team is confident, the team starts the game confident, the team starts the second half confident. But I want to see the way we emotionally react to losing it because it’s also another stage – be losing and try to change a result because in this moment everything is going in our favour. You know, it’s not always motorway. You always find difficult roads and we have to be ready,” via the team’s site.
At Everton last season, Lukaku scored 25 goals and tallied six assists for the Toffees. So far this season, he has three goals in two appearances for Manchester United. Overall, Lukaku has scored 88 goals and accumulated 28 assists in 188 Premier League appearances.
As he continues to play with a much happier demeanor in 2017-18, the sky is the limit for Romelu Lukaku. And that is a scary thought for all the other teams that Manchester United faces this season — and beyond.
