Recap: Dolphins Unable to Overcome Eagles Late in 38-31 Loss

The Miami Dolphins and Philadelphia Eagles played in one of the final preseason tune-ups for both teams, and the Eagles used solid defense throughout in their 38-31 win over the Dolphins.

Starting quarterbacks Jay Cutler and Carson Wentz controlled each of their offenses while under center, and there were plenty of fireworks on both sides of Thursday night’s preseason game.

Cutler was 5-of-8 for 105 yards and one touchdown pass while Wentz was 6-of-10 for 129 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Wentz connected with new Eagles’ receivers Torrey Smith (50-yard touchdown) and Alshon Jeffery (15-yard touchdown) in the first quarter of play.

But the star of the first quarter for the Dolphins was running back Jay Ajayi, who was recently cleared from concussion protocol. Ajayi had nine rushes for 53 yards and scored on a pair of two-yard touchdown runs for Miami.

On the defensive side of the ball, former Steeler Lawrence Timmons made his presence felt with five tackles and one interception off of a leaping rush from the outside.

For the Eagles, a 31-yard interception return for a touchdown by linebacker Mychal Kendricks gave them a 28-24 halftime lead.

In the first half, the Dolphins and Eagles combined for seven touchdowns, but the second half was much more methodic. A total of 17 points was scored when the teams went to their second and third-string players, as was expected in possibly the final preseason game for most starters.

Both teams had their starters play most of the first half, but it is unclear how much they will play in each of their final preseason games.
