Julian Edelman Leaves Game Against Lions with Knee Injury

A potential huge loss for the Patriots

UPDATE: As of 10:25 p.m ET, the Patriots fear that Julian Edelman has suffered a torn ACL according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Julian Edelman fell to the ground after making a catch only two minutes into the New England Patriots preseason game against the Detroit Lions. And now every AFC East team has had a significant injury hit their roster in one form or another.

Edelman caught a pass from Tom Brady and cut inside before going down to the turf with a non-contact knee injury; clinching his right knee in pain.

According to the Associated Press, “Edelman was evaluated by New England’s medical staff behind the team’s bench in a blue tent. Brady went inside the temporary structure after ending the drive with his first of two touchdown passes to Chris Hogan. Shortly after the quarterback left the tent, Edelman emerged and was taken to the locker room in a cart.”

Edelman has been one of the most consistent receivers in the NFL since he took over in the slot after Wes Welker left for the Denver Broncos. He is a better weapon than Welker was, and takes less from opponents when they get in his face.

If the receiver ends up missing any amount of time in the regular season, the Patriots will not only miss his consistency but also his competitive fire that he plays every snap with.

In his first four seasons in the NFL, Edelman only had 69 receptions. But in the last four seasons, he has 356 receptions for 3,826 yards and 20 touchdown receptions.
