U2 Announces New Studio Album, ‘Songs of Experience’

Irish rock band, U2, are back with a brand new album, Songs of Experience, their first full-length studio album since their 2014 album, Songs of Innocence, was released for free on Apple iTunes.

largeThe band first announced plans to release a new album in 2017, as well as plans for the 25th Anniversary tour of the 1987 classic, The Joshua Tree, in a Facebook video, which was posted on Christmas, last year.

In anticipation of their forthcoming album, the band surprised fans with the mid-week release of, “You’re The Best Thing About Me,” their first new single in three years.

Inspired by the classic poem, “Songs of Innocence and Experience,” from 18th Century wordsmith, William Blake, the album continues the story of their 2014 concept album. It also includes artwork by photographer Anton Corbijn, featuring The Edge‘s daughter, Sian Evans sporting a combat helmet.

The release of their new single comes just one week after the band surprised fans with video of a live performance of “The Blackout,” a new song, which, according to the band’s website, will also be featured on their upcoming album.

“While Songs of Innocence charted the band’s earliest influences and experiences in the late 1970s and early ’80s, the new album is a collection of songs in the form of intimate letters to places and people close to the singer’s heart; family, friends, fans, himself,” the band explain on their website.

A release date has not been announced as of press time, however, the band says that Songs of Experience will be made available to purchase on CD, vinyl, and digital download.

To hear more from the new album, tune in to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon tomorrow night for a special live performance of the new single. And be sure to keep an eye out for a special visual art piece, which will accompany the album.
